What is Arashiyama?

Arashiyama is a picturesque area located on the northwestern outskirts of Kyoto city central. Known for its exquisite natural scenery, this area is often a favorite among both locals and tourists alike. Visitors flock to Arashiyama here for its serene beauty, which includes the ever-popular bamboo groves, lush mountains, and the famous Togetsukyo Bridge. It’s a place where nature and culture beautifully intertwine, making it a must-visit while in Kyoto.

Why Arashiyama is Special

What sets Arashiyama apart from other attractions in Kyoto is its peaceful blend of man-made and natural beauty. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is perhaps the most captivating site, where towering bamboo stalks sway majestically in the wind. Arashiyama is home to several historic temples and shrines, including the Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site that showcases refined traditional Japanese architecture and beautifully landscaped gardens. Arashiyama can be enjoyed year-round, becoming especially busy during cherry blossom season in the spring and in autumn during the foliage season (late November - early December) when the leaves change color.

Getting to Arashiyama

Reaching Arashiyama from Kyoto Station is quite straightforward. The most common route is to take the JR San-In Line from Kyoto Station, and in about 20 minutes you will arrive at the Arashiyama Station. For those preferring to travel by bus, take the Kyoto City Bus No. 28, which will take about half an hour or more depending on traffic. Taxis are also available, with a ride taking around 25 minutes again depending on traffic.
