About Kiyomizudera
Kiyomizudera, or the "Pure Water Temple," is one of Kyoto's most iconic landmarks and very popular with visitors. This beautiful temple, which dates back to 778 AD, is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the eastern outskirts of the city, Kiyomizudera is famous for its wooden stage that juts out over a hillside, providing breathtaking views of the cherry and maple trees below, especially stunning during the spring and fall. The wooden stage is a popular photography spot for tourists, with an amazing view of the surrounding area as the backdrop. Don’t forget to visit the nearby streets filled with quaint shops and tea houses that lead you up the hill to the temple at the hilltop.
Why Kiyomizudera is Special
Kiyomizudera is truly special not just for its stunning architecture but its deep spiritual significance. The temple is dedicated to Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, and has attracted countless visitors seeking solace and guidance. The main hall, or Hondo, features a long balcony where visitors can admire panoramic views of Kyoto. Legend has it that a jump from this stage would grant you a wish if you survived. Though this practice is now discouraged, the saying “to jump from the stage at Kiyomizu” has become a popular expression in Japanese, symbolizing the courage to take a bold leap of faith.
