What is the Sensoji Temple?

Sensoji Temple, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple, is located in Asakusa, on the northeastern end of Tokyo. It is the oldest temple in Tokyo and one of the most significant landmarks in all of Japan. Built in 628 AD, Sensoji is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy.

A Brief History of Sensoji

The history of Sensoji Temple dates back to the Asuka period when two fishermen discovered a statue of Kannon in the Sumida River. Recognizing its spiritual significance, they brought the statue to their village, which led to the establishment of Sensoji Temple. Over the centuries, the temple has undergone various reconstructions, especially after being destroyed during World War II, but its cultural significance has remained intact and, today, it attracts millions of visitors each year.
