The Significance of March in Japan’s Fiscal Calendar

For most Japanese companies, March marks the end of their fiscal year, which typically runs from April to March the following year. This cycle also applies to schools as the school year for students come to a close at the end of March. As the cherry trees blossom and the weather starts to become warmer, people are eager to wrap up the year and start anew at the start of April. But before they do that, some will use this period to take breaks and vacations.

Impact on Those Visiting Japan

If you are visiting Japan during this time, you may find yourself competing with the locals for transportations and accomodations. You should be wary of this and plan accordingly. If you have already done some planning and saw that you couldn't get that accomodation you were hoping for, this might be the reason why. This period is not as busy as the Golden Week in late April and early May (check out our blog on that as well), but you should still take it into consideration when planning your trip.
